Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth believes his side were hard done by in their 1-0 League Two defeat to Crawley Town.

Jimmy Smith scored the only goal of the game on the hour to condemn the Blues to an opening day loss for the first time under Ainsworth.

Wanderers were in the ascendency for most of the first half and Ainsworth felt his side could have come away with a positive result but for some wasteful finishing.

Ainsworth said: “It is one game in 46 so it is not going to be disaster time. I thought we absolutely dominated the first half.

“We supplied so many balls into the box and just couldn’t make them count. We had that big scramble at the end of the first half and how we haven’t scored I don’t know.”

His side were ultimately punished for a mistake which saw Smith latch onto a loose ball in the box and slot past Scott Brown in the Wycombe goal.

The goal seemed to take the wind out of Wanderers’ sails and Ainsworth bemoaned the error and lack of quality which followed as Wanderers tried to mount a recovery.

“The second half it is a mistake really which has cost us the game. Things turn on that and they had two breakaways in the second half and Scott made one save in the first,” he said.

“We had the ball going in the box many times and we just have to make better opportunities of that and get better touches on the ball.”

The match also saw Wycombe lose a number of players to injury as Myles Weston, Luke O’Nien and Michael Harriman all had to be replaced.

Weston’s looked the most severe and Ainsworth admitted the winger’s injury had an impact on the way his side set up.

He said: “Myles is a big player. He was the most serious out of them all and seemed to come off with a muscle pull so you are looking at weeks. I could be totally wrong and hopefully it is just a cramp.

“The other two are impact injuries, Micahel’s shoulder and Luke’s calf, we will have to assess them this week and hopefully we will get them back as soon as possible.

“I think changing the system and losing Myles Weston didn’t’ help. Losing Harriman and Luke O’Nien second half is tough for us but you know we go again and we push forward.”

Wycombe will now turn their attention to the visit of Bristol City in the League Cup on Tuesday.
