Sammie Szmodics made one and scored the other as Wycombe Wanderers fell to a 2-0 defeat to Colchester United at Adams Park.

The U’s man laid on the opener for Chris Porter just after the hour before grabbing a classy second late on.

The result ends Wycombe’s unbeaten start to their home League Two campaign and frustration got the better of them as six of their number were booked.

Sido Jombati was lucky not to see red late on after wildly kicking Craig Slater.

The full-time whistle also saw Paul Hayes involved in a lengthy discussion with fans who appeared to be remonstrating with the Wycombe captain.

Wanderers will now turn their attention to their EFL Trophy clash at Northampton on Tuesday night before returning to league action against Luton on Saturday.

Gareth Ainsworth made two changes from the side which drew 0-0 at Blackpool last week as Dayle Southwell and Sam Wood replaced Joe Jacobson and Nick Freeman.

The changes saw Michael Harriman drop to right-back while Sido Jombati moved to left-back to cover for the injured Jacobson.

Garry Thompson was deployed on the right of a four man midfield as Ainsworth persevered with a 4-4-2 formation.

A slow start saw both sides struggle to create early on before the hosts had two chances in the space of a minute just after a quarter of an hour.

Firstly Harriman’s free kick found Aaron Pierre and his header dropped invitingly for Southwell inside the six yard box.

The forward looked set to prod home, but an outstretched Colchester leg diverted the ball over the top to frustrate Wycombe.

Moments later Danny Rowe sent a cross in from the left, which again found Pierre in space.

With no defender in attendance, the Wycombe man glanced a header just wide of the left hand upright from 12 yards when he really should have scored.

Wanderers were indebted to the fine reactions of Jamal Blackman in the 27th minute as he denied Brennan Dickenson’s low drive.

The chance fell to him rather fortuitously after a deflection bounced off his arm to allow him to strike from the edge of the box.

Blackman got down to his left and pushed the ball away from danger with a solid save.

These two sides have a history harking back to battles for Conference titles in the early 90s, but there was little in the way of derby day aggression in the opening half.

Thompson was the first man to go into the ref’s book with six minutes of the first period remaining as he was judged to have dived in the box.

The veteran forward made no complaints and looked to have gone down under no contact after what was a fine individual run.

Wanderers started the second half brightly and two set pieces gave Adebayo Akinfenwa two sights of goal, but he headed wide on both occasions.

The first 15 minutes of the half produced little in the way of action and neither side could claim to be in the ascendency.

United grabbed the go ahead goal in the 63rd minute, however, as some good link up play between Porter and Szmodics unlocked the Wycombe defence.

Porter won the initial header in the Wanderers box to release Szmodics on the right hand side of the area.

He wasted little time in squaring and Porter was on hand to slide in and bundle home from all of a yard out.

The goal seemed to stir Wycombe into life and Marcus Bean saw his goal bound effort deflect just over in the 70th minute.

The chance came after Akinfenwa had an effort blocked and the striker was convinced he should have been awarded a penalty for a handball.

Any hopes Wycombe had of taking anything from the game were extinguished with eight minutes to play.

Szmodics, who had been busy throughout, collected the ball 20 yards from goal and unleashed a fine effort which flew past Blackman and nestled inside the left-hand post.

It was a clinical finish from the U’s man as his side’s greater composure in the final third proved decisive and gave them bragging rights over their rivals.
