WYCOMBE WANDERERS extended their winning run to six in a row as Garry Thompson struck a late brace to beat League One Millwall 3-1 in the Checkatrade Cup.

Thompson thumped home his first on 84 minutes past Tom King after excellent work by substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa.

His second came in injury time when he tapped in after good work by fellow substitute Scott Kashket.

Akinfenwa, introduced as a half-time substitute for Paul Hayes, had given The Chairboys the lead on 50 minutes from the penalty spot after Stephen McGinn was tugged back.

David Worrall equalised three minutes later when his cross cum shot squeezed at Jamal Blackman’s near post.

However, Blackman made a superb penalty save on 71 minutes when Fred Onyedinma’s spot kick after he was felled by substitute Aaron Pierre.

Wanderers made eight changes from the team that beat Chesterfield 5-0 on Saturday in the FA Cup and that included a debut for German centre half, Max Muller.

The game started a slow pace with both teams unable to create anything of note in the early exchanges.

Wycombe’s first chance came on 12 minutes when Hayes played a clever ball through for Sam Wood but he snatched at his first-time effort and hit it wide.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men also sneaked in on 20 minutes when Thompson’s good work on the left saw him cross into the box and Wood saw his shot well saved by King, but the whistle had blown for an infringement.

Millwall’s Ben Thompson carved out a chance on 23 minutes when he dispossessed McGinn and saw his strike from 25 yards sail just over the bar.

The Lions were slowly beginning to up the tempo and Onyedinma flashed a shot across Blackman’s six-yard box.

Muller was having an impressive debut for the Chairboys so far, tackling with real intent and also showing that he has a good eye for a pass.

The home side fashioned a great chance on 35 minutes when Will De Havilland’s header skewed backwards and Onyedinma beat Blackman to the ball but the goalkeeper’s presence proved too much for the Lions’ attacker and his heavy touch went out for a goal kick.

At half-time, Ainsworth made the pivotal change with Akinfenwa replacing Hayes.

Shortly after Akinfenwa’s introduction, Wycombe were awarded a spot kick after McGinn was fouled as he was about to pull the trigger.

However, on 53 minutes, Millwall equalised when Worrall’s firmly struck cross cum shot squeezed in at Blackman’s near post.

The game was beginning to open up with Onyedinma to the fore once again for the home side, having a shot deflected straight into the hands of Blackman before Wood hit a sizzling strike just wide.

Pierre replaced the excellent Muller on 59 minutes but he was at fault 12 minutes later when he bought down the pacey Onyedinma. However, Blackman got down low and made a top save to deny the Millwall frontman.

Man of the moment Kashket replaced McGinn on 75 minutes and his pace had an immediate effect, pulling the ball back to Akinfenwa but he pulled his left footed strike wide with the goal gaping.

Thompson then produced his late, late show to put Wycombe into the next round, with the draw for that tomorrow morning.
