MYLES WESTON struck a stunning equaliser at the death as Wycombe Wanderers came back from 3-1 down to grab a point in a thrilling encounter with league leaders Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

Weston ended his injury nightmare by curling home a beauty from the edge of the area to make it 3-3 after great work by Adebayo Akinfenwa and Paris Cowan-Hall.

It had looked good for Wycombe early on as a cool finish by in-form Scott Kashket had given the Chairboys the lead before goals from Jordan Slew, Jake Jervis and Yann Songo’o gave Argyle a 3-1 lead.

Adebayo Akinfenwa gave Wycombe hope as he pulled one before Weston completed Wanderers’ excellent fightback.

Before the late drama, Kashket kept up his remarkable scoring run when he ran onto Akinfenwa’s pass after eight minutes before clinically slotting past Luke McCormick for his 12th goal of the season.

However, the Pilgrims equalised on 17 minutes when Slew was given the freedom of the Wycombe area to smash a shot at Jamal Blackman, which trickled just over the line.

Six minutes before the break, Argyle took the lead when the lively Arnold Garita took advantage of Joe Jacobson’s slip to run into the area and he crossed low for Jervis who poked home.

The game looked over when Plymouth made it three on 56 minutes as Songo’o diverted Graham Carey’s corner over the line. Despite protestations from the Wycombe defence for an infringement, the goal stood.

Akinfenwa then got a goal his superb performance deserved when he volleyed home emphatically just two minutes later from Jacobson’s brilliant cross.

There were chances a-plenty in a game where the two teams have had excellent defensive records recently.

Plymouth started positively as Jervis got past Jacobson after two minutes and put in an inviting cross which Slew headed over.

It was a bright start from both teams as Wycombe looked for Akinfenwa’s presence up front and a slight scramble ensued but Michael Harriman scuffed his shot wide.

After Kashket’s goal, Argyle came back strongly just moments later when Connor Smith smashed a shot against the upright with Jamal Blackman beaten all ends up.

From that, Wycombe raced up the other end and Akinfenwa laid the ball back to Dominic Gape who saw his shot deflected just wide.

The opening 15 minutes was really open with both teams showing attacking intent which made for a very entertaining start to the match.

Slew then got the equaliser before Harriman was stretchered off with what looked like a nasty injury

Just as Argyle were slowly getting the upper hand, Akinfenwa made note of his threat still when he headed against the crossbar on 37 minutes from Jacobson’s excellent corner.

Unfortunately for Wanderers just a couple of minutes later, the Pilgrims took the lead when Garita played a superb low cross into the box which Jervis touched home.

The Wycombe backline were looking nervy and Jervis almost got in behind again just before half-time but the ball was hurriedly cleared.

Wanderers also had one more chance before the break but Aaron Pierre headed over from another decent Jacobson corner.

The second half commenced with the Chairboys looking to get back into the game and they started the better with a bit more slickness in their game and attempting to get the ball up to Akinfenwa more quickly.

Wycombe had a good opportunity on 53 minutes when free kick expert Jombati had a chance 25 yards out but struck the set piece over McCormick’s goal.

However, Plymouth’s third goal was tinged with controversy when Songo’o appeared to knock the ball in with an arm.

The Chairboys would not lie die, however, and a wonderful cross by Jacobson was smashed home by Akinfenwa.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men were now trying to force their way back in this thrilling game and were putting some real pressure on the hosts with a series of corners.

The home side weathered that storm though and had a golden chance to extend their lead on 65 minutes when Garita blazed over after Pierre had mis-kicked.

Back came the Blues once more and McCormick was called into action a minute later when Matt Bloomfield’s shot was palmed away before Akinfenwa’s effort was hacked off the line before Weston’s magnificent intervention.

Although, Wycombe’s winning streak came to the end, the result here felt just like a win as they move onto another away game at Cheltenham in four days time.
