GARETH AINSWORTH praised his side’s ‘amazing character’ after seeing his team come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with league leaders Plymouth Argyle in a pulsating clash at Home Park.

An 89th minute equaliser from Myles Weston, his first goal for Wycombe, salvaged a brilliant point for Wanderers who looked down and out when Argyle went 3-1 up on 56 minutes.

However, the brilliant Adebayo Akinfenwa pulled one back two minutes after that to give Ainsworth’s men hope before Weston’s timely intervention.

In-form Scott Kashket had given Wanderers the lead after just eight minutes before goals from Jordan Slew, Jake Jervis and Yann Songo’o had given the Pligrims some breathing space.

Ainsworth was understandably delighted after the game and he heaped the plaudits onto Weston for his heroics. He said: “To do what we have done has shown amazing character.

“3-1 down with half an hour to go and to turn it round like that is awesome. Bayo’s goal gave us some hope and then what a finish from Myles Weston.

“We have been waiting a long time for Myles and I have felt as he has had a stop start career with his groin injury but that is the bit of quality that I have seen in him.

“I am really proud of the resilience we have shown and a big shout out to the players as they have sacrificed Christmas Day and it has made it all worthwhile.”

However, Ainsworth wasn’t particularly pleased with the goals his side conceded after their brilliance at the back in recent weeks which has seen them go more than six hours without letting in a goal in the league.

He added: “The two goals in the first half weren’t great. Slew scored with a great finish but we didn’t pick him up and we have to organise better when people aren’t in position.

“With the second one, there were a few uncharacteristic errors on our part and those goals could have been avoidable.

“I thought on the other hand our goals were real quality and we have such big hearts.”

The equaliser was the goal of the game from the left boot of Weston, describing it as the best goal of his career, and he was emotional during his ecstatic celebrations.

“A lot of things went through my mind when I scored,” explained Weston.

“I just had a child, a little boy, and that was going through my mind and obviously knowing we got something out of the game too was very important.”

He added: “The boys showed real belief when we were 3-1 down and I thought we were the better team.

“Our whole squad is amazing here and everyone supports everyone and the boys are 100% behind each other.”

This is now a time for Weston to kick on with his Wycombe career after being plagued by injuries this season. He commented: “No-one has seen me at my best yet but I am going to take one game at a time and hopefully be producing goals and helping out the boys I can get in the team.”
