Wycombe Wanderers endured a miserable day at the office as they lost tamely to Stevenage 3-0 at the Lamex Stadium.

Goals from Steve Schumacher, Matt Godden and Tom Pett sealed a disappointing week for Gareth Ainsworth’s men after their Checkatrade Trophy semi-final defeat on Tuesday night.

Schumacher broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when he nodded home from inside the six-yard box after excellent work by Jobi McAnuff on the left hand side.

Right on half-time, the visitors were dealt a sucker punch when Pett was hacked down inside the box and Godden coolly sent Jamal Blackman the wrong way.

The final nail in the coffin was hammered home by Pett on 48 minutes when he robbed the dawdling Dominic Gape just outside the area and he rounded Blackman before slotting into an empty net.

Stevenage began the brighter and they had the first chance of the game on four minutes when Charlie Lee blazed well over from Schumacher’s corner.

Wanderers first effort on goal came from Luke O’Nien on 10 minutes when his 20 yard daisycutter was comfortably held by Jamie Jones in the Stevenage goal.

Sam Saunders almost broke the deadlock on 15 minutes when is free kick from 20 yards went just wide with Jones beaten all ends up.

Jamal Blackman produced a magnificent save on 22 minutes when the ball broke to McAnuff whose curler looked destined for the top corner only for the on-loan Chelsea keeper to tip the ball over the bar.

Schumacher then headed his side in front before they had a chance to double their lead on 41 minutes when Josh McQuoid’s firm strike was well stopped by Blackman.

Right on half-time disaster struck for Wanderers when Pett was felled and Godden stroked home his 15th goal of the season.

Just after the break, Pett secured the points with a gift with the Chairboys at sixes and sevens at the back.

Ainsworth’s men had barely tested Jones and Stevenage looked more likely to extend their advantage.

They almost grabbed a fourth when Godden nipped in only to see his snapshot deflected wide of the upright.

Chances were few and far between for the visitors, with Saunders shooting well wide with 15 minutes to go.

It was certainly a day to forget for Wanderers and Ainsworth will be hoping he can galvanise his side for Tuesday’s trip to Crewe.
