Wycombe Wanderers eased to an ultimately comfortable 2-0 win over League Two basement side Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road to give their playoff hopes a boost.

Matt Bloomfield and Myles Weston grabbed the goals to ensure Wanderers sit just two points off the playoffs with six games remaining.

Wycombe’s task was made easier when Tom Parkes was shown a straight red card by referee Charles Breakspear on 26 minutes as he was given his marching orders for an ugly knee-high tackle on Garry Thompson.

The Chairboys had the first attempt after just 60 seconds when some neat interplay saw the ball fall to Sam Saunders who saw his shot from distance comfortably saved by Sam Sargeant.

Orient came back strongly and Josh Koroma burst into the box after just three minutes but saw his close-range effort smartly saved by Jamal Blackman.

The O’s were on top in the early stages and Weston came to Wanderers’ rescue when he cleared off the line after an Orient corner caused problems for the visitors.

New manager Omer Riza’s side were certainly making their lowly league position look false and Konoma saw his effort from the edge of the box deflected inches wide after 11 minutes.

Adebayo Akinfenwa had a chance to add his tally of 17 goals for the season on 17 minutes but he saw his volley blocked in the six-yard box after some excellent close control.

Sandro Semedo then went up the other end and tested Blackman from long-range and the on-loan Chelsea stopper was equal to it.

Parkes then was sent off before the Chairboys then made the most of their numerical advantage count on 35 minutes.

Bloomfield tucked the ball past Sargeant from close-range after excellent work by Akinfenwa and the aid of a deflection saw the ball fall kindly to him.

A minute later, Wanderers scored a controversial goal to make it 2-0 when Weston appeared to push Jens Janse and he collided with Sargeant which allowed the winger to put the ball into an empty net. Breakspear allowed the goal to stand despite venomous protests from the Orient players.

With Orient looking shellshocked, Wanderers looked to stamp their authority on the game.

Three minutes into the second half, Bloomfield almost added a third but he sliced his shot wide after Orient failed to deal with Joe Jacobson’s corner.

The game had fizzled out somewhat early in the second half, with Wycombe in control and Orient failing to create anything at all.

Thompson had a chance on the hour mark as he got behind the O’s defence but Nicky Hunt got back just in time to clear.

The home side then created their first real opening of the second half two minutes later when Rowan Liburd got in down the right but his strike was well held by Blackman.

Sargeant then produced heroics on 64 minutes as he brilliantly tipped Saunders’ thunderbolt over the bar.

Aaron Pierre then came mightily close to extending the Blues lead two minutes later when his acrobatic effort shaved the crossbar.

Orient threatened sporadically and Tristan Abrahams saw his firm shot parried away by Blackman on 78 minutes.

The last few minutes saw the Orient fans raucously demand the board be sacked as their stay in League Two looks to come to a sad end.

In injury time, Will De Havilland scored but his saw his header ruled out for a push at the far post.

The final whistle blew shortly after and Gareth Ainsworth will be delighted with his side’s professional performance as the playoffs certainly remain within Wycombe’s grasp.
