Gareth Ainsworth has made his first new signing of the summer, capturing commanding centre-half Adam El-Abd on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Adams Park, having played most of his career to date at a higher level, winning two promotions in a 10-year spell with Brighton & Hove Albion before repeating that feat with Bristol City and then on loan at Bury.

El-Abd – who has seven international caps to his name with Egypt - spent last season as captain of League One side Shrewsbury Town before leaving the club on Friday afternoon, paving the way for a switch to the Chairboys.

Ainsworth said: “Adam is a player that I’ve always admired, going back to my playing days when he was a nightmare to come up against. He’s a real warrior – very strong, committed and good in the air.

“He’s also exactly the type of character that will fit right into this squad; he’s got excellent leadership qualities and will also be a great help to the younger defenders at the club.

“I’m delighted to bring him here and look forward to seeing him provide extra competition in the centre of defence."

The Blues boss added that El-Abd’s arrival does not necessarily spell the end of Aaron Pierre’s time at Adams Park, although the defender is now out of contract and free to leave to another club.

“Our offer to Aaron remains on the table and we hope he chooses to return here, but if not then we wish him all the best. Pre-season training is now underway and we have to prepare as best we can for the start of the season, so it’s an ideal time to bring Adam in and we’ll keep working hard to make this squad as strong as it can be.”
