Wycombe Wanderers moved up to fifth in League Two with a hardworking 2-1 over Yeovil Town at a chilly Adams Park.

Ebere Eze and Joe Jacobson scored the goals to put Wanderers 2-0 with Francois Zoko pulling one back for the visitors.

Eze was the star of the show in the first half and opened the scoring with a rasping strike on 37 minutes, lashing into the corner after good work by Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Jacobson doubled the home side's advantage from the penalty spot five minutes later after Paris Cowan-Hall was shoved over the box as he was about to pull the trigger.

QPR loanee Eze had the first real opportunity for Wycombe on 10 minutes when he picked up the loose ball after a fumble by Yeovil keeper Artur Krysiak but his 20-yard effort went straight into Krysiak’s grateful arms.

It was a pretty turgid opening 20 minutes, although Yeovil were showing much more ambition than Wycombe’s previous opponents at home, Crawley Town.

Eze was the game’s shining light at this point, making inroads into the Glovers defence and he had the game’s next chance on 20 minutes but his fierce strike from 15 yards was blocked well by Krysiak.

And it was the 19-year-old who gave Wanderers the lead before Jacobson coolly slotted home the penalty which looked to give Wanderers a two-goal cushion at the break.

However, Zoko had other ideas when he tapped home from close-range following excellent work by Jordan Green.

The glut of goals sparked the game into life and Wycombe almost atoned for that error with another just before half time when Luke O’Nien got in behind but his cross was cleared before Akinfenwa headed inches over.

The Chairboys started the second period on top with a series of attacks but Yeovil were doing well to keep the Blues at bay.

Sido Jombati had a rare chance for a goal on 66 minutes with a free kick from 20 yards after a foul on the excellent Eze but Krysiak held on comfortably.

The second half really fizzled out with the game becoming a scrap in the middle of the park with neither side able to create much of note.

Jacobson was next to have a go from a free kick but his effort on 73 minutes was deflected inches wide.

Darren Way's side almost equalised with 13 minutes to go when Green met a high ball on the volley but his effort went just wide with Scott Brown scrambling.

Wanderers were still on top but the Glovers defence stood firm, defending crosses from the home side well.

Zoko had a sniff to equalise for Yeovil with five minutes to go but he lashed his cross-shot right across the face of goal.

Akinfenwa almost scored a goal of the season contender at the death when he turned and volleyed towards goal but his effort crashed against the crossbar with Krysiak beaten.

The win means Wanderers climb well inside the playoffs, eight points off leaders Luton Town.
