Wycombe Wanderers have rejected an approach from a Championship club to speak to Blues manager Gareth Ainsworth in relation to their managerial vacancy.

The club behind the approach is understood to be managerless Championship side Barnsley, the Bucks Free Press can reveal.

Ainsworth, who has been at the helm permanently since November 2012, was awarded League Two manager of the month for January and Wanderers currently sit third in League Two with serious ambitions for promotion.

Wycombe have won six out of seven league games since the turn of the year and are currently the highest scoring league team in 2018 in the Football League.

Ainsworth had a hugely successful career as player for the likes of Preston, QPR and Lincoln and has achieved a magnificent 40 per cent win rate in his time at Adams Park.

The 44-year-old is currently an 8/1 chance with BetVictor to become the new boss of the Tykes.

Wanderers’ sporting director Andrew Howard said: “Gareth is under contract with us and continues to do an outstanding job, and therefore we are fully focused on continuing the progress we are making with him in charge.”
