Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth was left frustrated but focused on the positives as the Blues couldn't find a way past a dogged Port Vale side in their 0-0 draw at Adams Park.

Substitute Craig Mackail-Smith had the two best chances but Vale keeper Ryan Boot made a brace of excellent saves to keep the forward at bay.

Despite the result, Wanderers remain in third and excellently placed in their promotion challenge.

Ainsworth said: "The clean sheet and the seven points in a week is a positive as well as some players coming back.

"We go to Notts County in third place. It is fine margins if Macca's shot goes in at the end and we would be celebrating a well-earned win and a clean sheet.

"If there was one team who deserved to win it was Wycombe but I have to give credit to Neil Aspin and Port Vale.

"They have come not to lose. They tried to attack but we defended really well and Browny has had to make one save.

"I think the frustrations of not winning cloud what happened in the game.

"We did create chances but we looked a bit leggy after Wednesday and I think the Crawley game took its toll a little bit."

The Chairboys were missing influential midfielder Luke O'Nien through injury but Ainsworth hoped he would be back for that crunch game with County.

He added: "He tweaked his knee ligaments but hopefully he will be back for Friday.

"Curtis Thompson came in and did well. Dominic Gape has had a fantastic season and we have the players to come in and do well and we will see how we can go over the weekend."
