The final five games of the season are now upon Wycombe Wanderers with their dreams of promotion resting on these fixtures.

After such a magnificent season to date on the pitch, it comes down to two home games and three away matches to decide their fate.

The fixtures, on paper, look relatively kind with a trip to Yeovil first up on Saturday for the Blues.

Yeovil are sat in lower mid-table, too far away for a late promotion or play-off surge but safe from the trapdoor of relegation.

However, the Glovers have had an improvement in results lately, and just three games ago, they pulled off a 6-2 drubbing of Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena, themselves in the promotion shake-up.

Ainsworth knows how tough this fixture as they go into, what he describes, as the “most intense week of the season”.

Unusually for this stage of the season, the Chairboys will be having a 12-day break between games and Ainsworth hoped that the break would be beneficial to the group.

He said: “We tried to balance it with not killing them and it gave us a chance to have a development day and do some sessions we wanted to put on.

“We definitely have them ticking over at this stage of the season. They are fit enough to keep going and it is about keeping them minds fresh.

“From a two-week break we are going into a really intense week, probably the most intense week of the season so far and we want to start with a good performance at Yeovil and see what we can bring back from there on Saturday.

“Nobody has put six past Coventry this season and we have to respect that. I was at Swindon the other night to watch them and they came back for a draw so the spirit and character they showed was great.

“I like Darren and I think he is a good manager. He is a character in football and his team will want to finish with as many points as they can.

“The pressure is off them now and sometimes that can be dangerous so we will see what happens at Huish Park.

“It is a tough place to go and we will have to be at our best to get anything out of this game.”

Wanderers boast the best away form in League Two and are still unbeaten on the road in 2018, a record Ainsworth thinks will stand his side in good stead for the run-in.

He added: “It has been something we have had for two or three years.

“The togetherness and mental strength of the boys is crucial and hopefully we can keep that away from with three away games.

“Hopefully we can get enough points on the board to be in the mix. We will concentrate fully on Yeovil first then it is a quick recovery for the next two games after that.

“Yeovil is huge and I won’t be prioritising any games ahead of any other.”

With such a pivotal week ahead, the Blues then travel to Lincoln on Tuesday evening before a home game with league leaders Accrington Stanley on April 21.

It is safe to say that the Wycombe rollercoaster will be at full tilt.
