WANDERERS’ hopes of an immediate summer cash injection from the sale of Matt Phillips to Blackpool have been dashed by Blues owner Steve Hayes this week.
He says the club won’t be getting any of the second instalment of the potential £700,000 fee they are owed by Blackpool during the close season because Phillips has not played enough games in the Premier League yet.
That will be a blow to supporters who were expecting a £300,000-plus summer windfall if Blackpool avoided relegation.
At the time of his transfer last year an official Wanderers statement said: “The clubs agreed a two stage fee that will see Blackpool pay £325,000 now and a further sum if they remain in the Premier League next season.
“The second part of the fee will become payable even if Blackpool are relegated this season, provided they regain their top level status within four years.”
But it now transpires that there is some small print in the clause which was not reported by either club on their news channels and Hayes reassured fans it is nothing to worry about.
He said: “Even if they get relegated we’ve got clauses in there for if they go back up within a certain number of years, how many minutes he’s on the pitch, and there’s a high sell-on clause.”
