BLUES boss Gary Waddock hailed his side’s character and a slice of good fortune after a battling win over Tranmere on Saturday.
Tranmere threw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at Wanderers in the second half after debutant Matty Whichelow and captain Gareth Ainsworth had put the Blues ahead.
But a combination of sheer grit and determination from Waddock’s men coupled with a sprinkling of good fortune ensured Wanderers held on.
The gaffer was full of praise for the way his backline stood firm under intense pressure and hopes Lady Luck continues to wear her Blue colours.
He said: “They threw the kitchen sink at us second half. They hit the woodwork, we had goal line clearances and they had a goal disallowed.
“But we’ve had periods this season where things haven’t gone our way. They say it evens itself out over a season and we got one today.
“The players worked very hard, considering we went a goal behind and after the result at Brentford, they showed a lot of character to turn the result around.
“Players were putting their bodies on the line and that is what we need.
“They got on with it and the fans got on with it. They were good, they could have gone the other way but they didn’t, they stuck with the lads because they could see they were working hard.”
Chesterfield falling to Carlisle and the big freeze claiming Charlton’s match with Rochdale meant the Blues lifted themselves off the bottom and out of the dropzone with the vital victory.
The Blues boss is happy to have the points in the bag rather than the game in hand and warned the Wanderers faithful to brace themselves for a rollercoaster ride during the last few months of the season.
He said: “Teams have got games in and around us but they have to play those games, we have the points. We’ve thrown it back their way, they now have to win those games.
“There’s lots of games to play, there will be lots of twists and turns from now until the end of the season and everyone has to remain calm.”
