'We've got nothing to lose and everything to gain'

By Alan Feldberg »

WYCOMBE Wanderers are going to Bramall Lane tomorrow determined to have fun.

They know they’re not expected to get anything from the game, the pressure is off and it’s the sort of game they see as a reward for slogging their way out of League Two last season.

Manager Gary Waddock said: “We’ve got nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

“Everybody in the footballing world would expect Sheffield United to win, so we can go up there and enjoy ourselves.

“It’s a big, big task for us, but one that we worked so hard for last year – to be able to play at stadiums like this – and we want to enjoy it.

“It doesn’t get any bigger. We go into every game looking to win, but it would be a big bonus for us if we could get anything from the game.”

But if that sounds like Waddock and co are heading to Yorkshire as tourists more than footballers, that’s not the case.

Wanderers pulled themselves out of the drop zone with their backs-to-wall win over Tranmere in their last outing, and there is a quiet yet growing belief within the camp.

If they can keep the momentum going tomorrow, a run of games against Yeovil, Hartlepool, Walsall, Scunthorpe and Leyton Orient could go a long way to changing the course of their season.

Waddock said: “The players have got that confidence from last week...you could see it in the dressing room after the game.

“A number of weeks I’ve come in and it’s been flat. Last week meant a lot to them and going into this group of games against teams quite close to us, it gives everybody a lift – especially when you pop out of that bottom four.”

Wanderers can take further inspiration from a win over the Blades at Adams Park earlier in the season.

Waddock said: “That will have no bearing whatsoever. Sheffield are a massive football club with fantastic support. They will want to put that right.

“But our main concern is making sure that we perform and that we aren’t overawed by the teams we’re playing.”

Meanwhile, Waddock expects the game to go ahead despite the weather forecasts.

He said: “The surrounding areas will possibly be a concern, but we’ll prepare for the game as though it’s on. We believe it will be on.”
