Lewis is loving being back with Saints
TERRELL Lewis has backed Chalfont St Peter boss Danny Edwards to steer him back into the big time.
Lewis is back with the village club this season after a dream year away with Football League club Chesterfield failed to have a fairytale ending.
He signed a one-year deal with the Spireites and made one Football League appearance for them before being hit by injury and being released at the end of last season.
He had offers to go elsewhere but opted to return to Chalfont and start again.
And the 22-year-old right midfielder reckons it is the best decision he could have made.
He said: “I came back to Chalfont because I honestly believe it is my best chance of getting back into the Football League.
“Football is based on opinions and there’s only a handful of people you can trust.
“I know I can trust Danny Edwards. He will guide me in the direction to get back to where I want to be.
“I can’t wait to get back into the pro game and he and the people at Chalfont are the right people to help me.
“But at the moment I am just loving being back at Chalfont St Peter.”
Saints have been all conquering in the Spartan League this season and Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Hanwell Town maintained their astonishing record of 15 league wins from 15 games played.
And Lewis puts his and the team’s success down to Edwards and the coaching at Chalfont.
He said: “I have given them five years and they have done an awful lot for me.
“They got me my move to Chesterfield which was an amazing experience.
“I learned so much at Chesterfield. I was training with the first team and until Christmas I was flying.
“I was on the first team bench but after Christmas I got injured an my confidence went.
“I was very disappointed to be released. There were a few other clubs sniffing around but I knew I had to come back to Chalfont.
“I knew that coming back would be best for me and give me the best chance of getting back into the League.
“Some people thought I was mad but I disagree.
“I am enjoying my football more than ever and I think I am a better player now than I was when I got my move to Chesterfield.”
He took a little bit of time to readjust back to life at Chalfont but ten goals and more rave reviews have put him back on the radar of scouts.
He said: “I knew Danny Edwards would have my best interests at heart and if I had gone anywhere else I wouldn’t have had that.
“He wants me to succeed just like he wants to help every player at Chalfont.”
And with Terry Venables former right hand man with England, Ted Buxton, also on the scene at Chalfont, Lewis is convinced he is in just the right place.
He said: “Ted Buxton is an absolute legend. He knows so much stuff about the game and he has got a ridiculous amount of connections.
“To have Sir Alex Ferguson’s number on your mobile phone is amazing. He even got a text from David Beckham when he was with us once.”
But while Lewis is hoping his ability and Chalfont’s connections will help to propel him back into the Football League, he isn’t looking any further ahead than tomorrow’s home match against Hertford.
He said: “I am just waiting in anticipation for every Saturday.”
And while his manager doesn’t believe that Chalfont can do an Arsenal and go through an entire league season unbeaten, Lewis does.
He said: “There is so much belief in our squad and our good start doesn’t surprise me.
“We are loving the manager’s tactics and strategy but we still haven’t shown our full potential.
“We are still only in first gear.”
