GARETH Ainsworth said he was content with a point at Portsmouth – but his players were disappointed it wasn’t all three.

Blues went in front against a side strongly fancied by the bookmakers to go up through Sam Wood’s first goal of the season, before being pegged back courtesy of Johnny Ertl’s blockbuster from the edge of the box.

And Ainsworth said it was a reflection of the high standards his players have set for themselves this year that having to content themselves with a share of the points was a disappointment to them.

Wanderers had the better of the chances in an even first half before taking the lead four minutes after the interval when Wood diverted home Peter Murphy’s cross-cum-shot.

That prompted a barrage of pressure from the hosts and they claimed what was probably a deserved share of the spoils through Ertl’s powerfully-hit equalising goal.

The result keeps Wanderers in the top three – at one point this afternoon they were top of the pile – and Ainsworth wants his men to keep it going.

He said: “Being at the top breeds confidence. It backs up what we are trying to do in training.

“A lot of people have come to Fratton Park and tried to get a point and been beaten.

“It’s a big point. The pleasing thing for me is the boys are disappointed they didn’t win the game. We had chances, we dominated until we scored, then we just took our foot off the gas.

“Last 30 minutes, they hit the bar, Matty [Ingram] made a great save on one, they scored the corner – other than that there weren’t too many chances. There were a few crosses flashing across.

“We edged it on the chance side of things. A draw’s a great result at Portsmouth.”
