PAUL Hayes reflected on his Roy of the Rovers moment as he scored his 100th Football League goal.

The Wanderers striker has doubtlessly scored more artistic and important goals than his scrambled second half effort against Cambridge United on Saturday.

But he said it was the full package - captaining the side and his goal being the only one of the game - that meant it was a moment that will live long in the memory.

Hayes said: "You can't ask for much more. It's been a long time coming getting my 100th league goal. It's taken me 12 years to get there. There's no better way than for it to be the winning goal.

"Do I have a favourite goal? It's hard to remember but if I'm honest it's probably today's. It's your 100th goal, it's the club I'm captain of at the moment, it's the winner. It's what dreams are made of when you're a little kid."

Of those 100 goals, 11 have been scored in Wanderers colours and five have come in this season's opening ten fixtures.

Hayes said: "This is probably the most I've had straight off the start of the season. I think I got three in six once, then faded off.

"On a personal note it's been fantastic and collectively as a team it's been fantastic as well."

The 31-year-old added: "Fair play to Cambridge, they played really well today. They're going to be alright this season.

"We weathered it a bit to start with. They were on the front foot, last 20 minutes of the first half we started coming into it - second half we had a little bit too much for them, got the goal and saw it out well."

His manager Gareth Ainsworth said: "He’s a clever player. I know Paul from his time here first time. I know exactly what he does. He was my first signing and my captain.

"He’s leading the line well and leading the team well.

"You just get clubs you do well at – I’ve had it myself. Hayesy seems to do well at Wycombe Wanderers. It’s no fluke because we know how he likes to play and we play this way.

"His work rate is something phenomenal for his age. His captaincy, the boys just follow it."

Asked if Hayes is the talismanic forward he had been looking for, Ainsworth said with a grin: "You can ask me again after 46 games and I’ll see how many goals he’s got then."
