GARETH Ainsworth said optimism and confidence are back at Adams Park after Wanderers surged up to second in the table.

The Blues boss couldn't hide his delight at the fact fans are going home happy again after he guided his side to a sixth win from ten matches with a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United on Saturday.

And he's hoping more people will jump on the bandwagon and take a look at the new-look Wanderers in a top of the table clash against big spending Northampton Town tomorrow.

Ainsworth's side have gone from second bottom to second from top in the space of just a few months and the Wanderers manager wants more people to revel in their good run of form.

He said: "We know the fans are there. We understand after last year it would be a long road to get a lot of people back, but that's what we intend to do.

"We are in the entertainment business. We want to put on a show on a Saturday and put on a club to be proud of - not just on the field but off the field as well.

"We want people to come back for the whole experience of Wycombe Wanderers. If the football's going well, that's an added bonus for them to come back.

"If we can slowly start filtering the masses back, it will be fantastic for the club."

Tomorrow sees an intriguing clash between a fifth placed Northampton side boasting League Two's most prolific attack and a Wanderers team with the Football League's most miserly defence.

Cobblers boss Chris Wilder, who kept them up on the final day of last season after spending 217 days in the relegation zone, spent big in the summer with prolific lower league scorer Marc Richards among his acquisitions.

Ainsworth said: "They definitely got the chequebook out in the summer. When Chris took over he was given a little chest of money to keep them up and he did just that.

"I think the chairman's backed him again in the summer and given him plenty of cash to spend and bring players in.

"In League Two, usually the teams that spend the money are around the top end of the table, and rightly so Northampton are up there. They're going to be tough opposition."

He added: "Confidence is a big thing in football and my boys are confident, which is great, but I'm sure Northampton's boys are confident. They are scoring a good amount of goals in the last few games and are riding high.

"We're building slowly. It looks quick because of where we are in the table, but believe me there's a long way to go and we've got to keep our feet on the floor."

Northampton have scored 18 times already this season, with Richards bagging seven in five before missing last week's trip to Morecambe.

Ainsworth joked: "It's something we've flagged up - looking at the two teams, it's probably set for a 0-0 now."
