PAUL Hayes and Gareth Ainsworth missed out on picking up awards this week after being shortlisted.

Hayes was among the four nominees for September's League Two player of the month award, with Ainsworth being nominated for the manager of the month award.

Both men missed out however - but Ainsworth said the nominations were a reflection of people taking note of his side's good form.

He said: "It should be the whole team of the month. Everyone has been a part of how well we've done at the start of the season.

"It's great for me, obviously, as the manager but everyone knows it's everybody involved that's enabled me to get up for this award. It's nice for Wycombe Wanderers to be recognised."

Ainsworth said of Hayes' contribution to the team: "He's been fantastic. Not only has he come here and been skipper for the first time - and he's taken on that role extraordinarily well - he's scored his 100th league goal and he's coming up to 500 appearances.

"He's done a great job galvanising everyone, he's been recognised and rightly so."

Hayes netted the 100th goal of his Football League career with the winner against Cambridge - one of three strikes he bagged last month.

He missed out on the award to Luton defender Luke Wilkinson after the Hatters kept a clean sheet in all five of their fixtures.

The manager of the month prize went to Southend's Phil Brown after he guided them to four successive wins in an unbeaten month.
