SAM Wood was billed as Bromley's answer to Gareth Bale hours before netting a spectacular strike the world's most expensive player would have been proud of.

The Wanderers midfielder has a knack for the spectacular and scored with a stunning 40 yard first time volley at Morecambe on Saturday that even had some of the home fans applauding.

It's goals like that - and a similar one that won him the goal of the season award two years ago - that caused him to be flagged up on BBC Radio Five Live's Fighting Talk show.

Panellist Thom Gibbs compared Wood to Bale in a question about which lower league player would walk into the San Marino international side, having seen him play in non league football for Bromley.

Wood's name did the rounds on Twitter after the show and again after his jaw dropping goal paved the way for a 3-1 win that took Wanderers top of League Two.

The 28-year-old said: "Someone tweeted me about it earlier but I didn't know what it was about. That's always nice to be compared to him, the most expensive player in the world.

"I hope he'd have been proud of it. I might try and get it to him - he might be able to pick tips up from me.

"I can't really remember too much about it to be fair. I remember it bouncing up and I thought, 'I'm going to hit it'. I did and luckily enough it's gone in, a bit like the York one.

"We were just discussing it in the changing room, I very rarely score an easy one. It was a great finish but most of all a great result."

Wanderers took a two goal lead before key defender Aaron Pierre went off with a head injury, and immediately after his withdrawal Morecambe threatened to claw themselves back into the game as Andy Fleming's header halved the deficit.

Wood said: "We had to shuffle a few players around. Some players had to play out of position, like Josh [Scowen], who did very well.

"We knew they were going to come and attack - they're a good side at home.

"I think we were on top anyway but with Aaron going off they took advantage of that. We were all unsettled. We scored another one to take the pressure off."

He added: "It's a bit different from last year. We're maybe getting a bit of luck we didn't get last year. We have to keep working hard and getting the points on the board."
