JOE Jacobson said team mate Sam Wood's wondergoal at Morecambe was down to manager Gareth Ainsworth allowing Wanderers players to express themselves.

The full back's 35 yard free kick, which sealed the 3-1 win that put Blues top of League Two, was overshadowed by Wood's outstanding volley from 40 yards that had opened the scoring.

Ainsworth said post match he encourages his players to shoot from wherever they want and Jacobson said the team are thriving from that freedom.

The former Welsh U21 international said: "The gaffer said to us before the game he wants us to have a few shots from distance. We worked on it this week and it's nice to see his fly in and mine to fly in.

"He wants us to go and express ourselves. If the ball's on the left hand side I'll bomb on. He's really up for me having a free role in that case, and Sido on the other side. We've got wingers in Woody and Paris who will track back and fill in for you. There's no holding back when it comes to that.

"I always back myself to score goals. I like to think I should get a few more than I do. As a full back I don't get many but when I do they tend to be not bad.

"I was pleased today; it gave us that breathing space of a two goal lead and settled everyone down and got us the three points."

Jacobson said however there was only one winner of the mini goal of the season contest he indulged in with Wood.

He said: "He's killed me, scoring that one. The technique he showed - I can't believe he's hit it from there. I didn't think it was really on."

The long range free kick was some way for Jacobson to open his goalscoring for the side he joined in the summer, meaning he's the first of Wanderers' two new full backs to get off the mark.

He said: "We've had a bit of a joke about it the last couple of days about who will get more, me or Sido. I'm one up on him. Woody's a midfielder so he tends to get a few more."
