AARON Pierre will be given as long as possible to prove his fitness as Wanderers prepare to face their biggest opponent of the season tomorrow.

Reportedly weighing in at more than 16 stone AFC Wimbledon striker Adebayo Akinfenwa wouldn't look out of place in the front row of the scrum, but he's carved out a career as a prolific lower league centre forward-cum-wrecking ball.

In tandem with strike partner Matt Tubbs he's plundered 14 goals already this season for League Two's deadliest forward combination.

Wanderers' own giant Pierre is the man most likely to have to mark him, but after fears he was concussed against Morecambe on Saturday Blues are sweating over whether he will be able to play tomorrow.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth said the blow to the head Pierre suffered after a collision with team mate Matt Ingram following a push from Morecambe's Kevin Ellison wasn't as severe as the one Steven Craig took, which ruled the Scotsman out of action for three weeks.

But the Blues boss could be left with a headache over how to reshuffle his defence in order to combat the big man if Pierre is ruled out.

Ainsworth said: "We are going to get him medically checked out towards the end of the week to see where he is. We'll not be making any decisions until as late as possible.

"We could do with Aaron in any game, let alone against Akinfenwa. He's been one of the performers of the season so far, so he would be important to me in any game. It doesn't matter who we're playing, Aaron Pierre is a big part of my defensive unit.

"We'll leave it to the last minute [to decide] whether Aaron can play or not."

While Akinfenwa and Tubbs have been firing in goals from all angles the Dons haven't taken full advantage as their prolific attack is offset by their leaky defence.

Only Cambridge have scored more than the 20 goals Wimbledon have netted this season, but just three teams have let in more than the 19 they've conceded.

They sit tenth in the table but are targeting a hat trick after beating both Bury and Burton Albion when they were top of the table.

Ainsworth said: "They seem to have a habit of doing that and we don't want that to happen to us. I'm sure they will be right up for taking another league leader's scalp and we have to be wary of that."

Attentions will then turn to Wanderers' trip to Exeter City on Tuesday night.

Wanderers have won all five matches they've played in Devon under Ainsworth's command but the Blues boss said: "Paul Tisdale has done a great job over the years he's been there. They'll be a tough proposition."
