GARETH Ainsworth hailed a complete team performance as Wanderers secured their first ever Football League win over AFC Wimbledon to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

The Dons have proved something of a bogey side for Blues since promotion to the Football League, winning three and drawing once, but they had no answer as their challenge was brushed aside by a Wanderers side in top form.

With the supply lines to their prolific front pairing of Adebayo Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs – who between them have scored 14 times – cut by a bustling midfield, Wanderers’ unbeaten run was never under any threat of coming to an end.

Josh Scowen, with only his third goal in 87 appearances, and Sam Wood, with his second in two games, netted after the break to ensure Blues are out in front on their own.

Having a better goal difference than Burton Albion was the reason behind Ainsworth’s side rising to the top of the table last week, but the Brewers tasting defeat today meant Wanderers have carved out a two point lead.

Dons boss Neal Ardley said Wanderers were “the better side all over the park” and Ainsworth was full of praise for his side after an eighth win of the season extended their run without a defeat to ten matches.

The Wanderers supremo said: “It was brilliant to see – a real team performance.

“Neal’s said the better team won and it’s great to hear. He’s been honest there because the best team did win today. We had all the chances, scored two good goals, limited a great strike force to very little, if anything.

“They [Tubbs and Akinfenwa] were very well looked after by the back five but the boys in front of them made the game easy. This isn’t a fluke – this is something we work on day in, day out. The way we perform in games, we try to make it easy for each other.

“You’re confident you’ve got the ability to try things because you know the person next to you is right alongside you and will work just as hard as you if it breaks down.

“The sheer resilience of everyone was great.

“I thought it was a little bit bitty in the first half. The referee had a good second half, let the game flow, and that’s when we got in our stride.”

He added however: “It was a real complete performance – but feet right back on the ground because we’ve got a long coach trip to Exeter on Tuesday, where I want to back this up.”
