GARETH Ainsworth was foiled in his attempt at taking a look at Marlow's Devontae Romeo after their midweek match was called off.

Marlow manager Mark Bartley said last week he was keen for Wanderers to come and run the rule over the 19-year-old attacking midfielder after they missed out on Ben Gladwin last season.

Gladwin moved on to Swindon Town last year and has played 13 times for the League One side this campaign after being handed the number seven shirt.

Bartley reckons Romeo can follow in his footsteps into the Football League, having been watched by Crystal Palace and going on trial with Swindon.

Ainsworth had planned to go on a scouting trip to Oak Tree Road on Tuesday night, only for Marlow's game to be called off.

They had been due to play Burnham in the Southern League Cup, but their opponents' FA Trophy replay against Weymouth took precedence and the tie has been re-arranged.

Ainsworth said: "Their game was cancelled on Tuesday - we were going to go down and watch their game.

"We keep tabs on the local teams.

"It's great for Marlow they have got another starlet. The last one, Swindon took him. I'm sure other clubs are looking at him."
