Wycombe Wanderers 1, York City 0.

Fred Onyedinma scored the winner for the second week running as Wanderers reached their 50 point survival target with victory over York.

The Millwall loanee netted the only goal of the game for the second match in a row in a man of the match performance that kept his side top of the table.

He had several chances to add to his solitary header, which came minutes after the half time interval, but he and Blues were denied time and again in an inspired display from City goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik.

The Austrian only signed for the Minstermen earlier in the week and without him between the posts Wanderers – as was the case last week against Hartlepool – could and ought to have added several times to their lead.

In a taster of what was to come, last week’s matchwinner Onyedinma missed two early opportunities to put Blues in front Olejnik raced off his line to smother his shot after a fine turn from Aaron Pierre before the striker headed inches over from the second ball in as City failed to get rid of it.

Olejnik made an even better point blank stop to keep out a shot from Wanderers’ own debutant Marcus Bean, but in truth the new midfielder ought to have done better after a clever dinked pass from Aaron Holloway had sent him clear.

A jinking run from the lively Onyedinma set Keith Lowe on his backside before former Wanderer Marvin McCoy flung himself at Peter Murphy’s stinging shot, with the ball rebounding out to Sam Wood to send one screaming just over the top of the bar.

Alfie Mawson and Onyedinma, once more, then conspired to open up the visiting defence again and Wood’s cute flick was blocked at the near post by John McCombe. It produced a corner, from which a powerful Aaron Pierre header was brilliantly pawed away by the confident and commanding Olejnik.

Wanderers held the upper hand but City could have snuck in front as Matt Ingram flapped at a corner and defender Keith Lowe hooked the ball over a gaping goal at the far post.

He buried his head in his hands knowing it was a bad miss and he was indebted to Olejnik again for ensuring Blues didn’t capitalise, as the visiting keeper somehow managed to foil Onyedinma from two yards with an incredible reflex stop.

He was finally beaten within minutes of the restart as this time Onyedinma came out on top in their personal duel. Wood’s volley helped on a Joe Jacobson towards the far post, and from two yards the Millwall loanee couldn’t miss as he headed home from two yards.

It continued to be one-way traffic as Wood span past a defender and had a volley clatter away off McCombe, before Onyedinma leapt high to flick the ball into Bean’s path but the midfielder dragged his shot wide from the edge of the box.

A Josh Carson volley and a Wes Fletcher shot – both of which flashed straight into Ingram’s midriff – were the only opportunities City could manage in response, as Olejnik again excelled to keep the score down by racing off the line and stopping Onyedinma’s stabbed effort with an outstretched foot.

Out of nowhere McCoy smashed one goalwards from 20 yards out and Ingram was at full stretch to turn the ball over the bar. From the resulting corner he just about managed to flick it round the post after appearing to be tugged back, prompting a second set piece from which Lowe scuffed a chance wide.

Onyedinma’s tricky footwork lit up Adams Park again as he danced his way past McCoy from Holloway’s flick on, but the finish didn’t match the approach as he fired straight at Olejnik.

The forward pulled two more late chances wide as York started to pressurise the Blues back four in the closing stages, but by then it was too little, too late.
