Gareth Ainsworth said Wanderers still aren't out of the woods financially after claiming the club could have been heading towards liquidation.

The Blues boss has not spent a single penny on transfers during his time in charge of the club due to the costcutting that was necessary after overspending in previous seasons.

Wanderers were close to going into administration prior to a takeover by the Wycombe Wanderers Trust, who decided to scrap the club's youth academy as a way of saving money.

Blues still ended up in court last year over an unpaid tax bill and the players were late in receiving payments.

Ainsworth said those days look to be behind the club following businessman Andrew Howard's installation as chairman - but he warned further financial prudence will be necessary over the coming months if the club is to get itself back on an even keel.

He said: “The fans realise now how close the club was to being in big trouble – by big trouble, I mean there may not have been a club. That’s the trouble we could have been close to.

“They are grateful that the club is now moving in the right direction, both on and off the pitch. The financial side is still a huge, huge task to get this club back round.

“You can have all the wins and promotions in the world, you’ve still got to sort your financial side out. We need to do that here, we need to keep working hard.

“The football and the finances are intertwined. The plan is, let’s get this club stable, let’s get a good financial footing, survive in League Two and kick on from there.”
