Former Wanderers playing hero Keith Scott believes his old club can win the League Two title - and has urged the side's youngsters to stay and help their promotion push.

Scott pleaded with the current squad to resist the advances of any team who might be interested in signing them in the current transfer window and instead stay and write themselves into club folklore.

Blues haven't won a title since the side Scott was part of finished top of the Conference in 1993 and the former striker said Gareth Ainsworth's side have the rare opportunity of winning a championship.

Wanderers are currently top of League Two after accruing 50 points from their first 25 games, putting them five points clear of the play off chasers.

They reached their 50 point landmark with a 1-0 win over York, whose manager Russell Wilcox said afterwards that Blues can go on to win the title.

And it's a view shared by Scott, who said he tipped his old side to be among the division's dark horses at the start of the season.

The 47-year-old told the Bucks Free Press: "I think they can win the championship, I really do. That's not just me saying that because I'm a supporter and a former player and I want them to, I really truly believe they can.

"The signings he made in the summer have been exceptional. I've seen a lot of League Two this season and Wycombe are as good as any of the sides vying for promotion.

"There's a lot of things that can happen, but based on what I've seen I think they can win the championship.

"Matt Ingram is the best goalkeeper in that league, and if you look at Jombati, Mawson, Pierre and Jacobson - you would struggle to find a better back four than those. Those five have been paramount to what Wycombe have achieved."

Scott also warned the squad the grass isn't always greener, urging them to stay put should a bigger club come circling during the January window.

He said: "The negative side [to doing well] is clubs will look at what they consider their stellar players. Gareth will want January to come and go very quickly.

"All those young players shouldn't consider moving. They have the opportunity to win a title and I think they should want to pursue that.

"Having said that, in reference to the current transfer window, it's dependent with which club comes calling. But I would urge the players, don't even consider going.

"They've got a great opportunity to win a title and get that championship medal. It's those moments you look back on at the end of your career."

Blues boss Ainsworth's mantra this season has been not to concentrate on reaching 50 points and achieve safety, having stayed up on goal difference last year.

Scott said he understood that point of view: "In fairness to him, with regards to how close it was last season, that would always be his first priority.

"Last season Gareth and his staff had to endure some not nice comments. This season they have done fantastically and they deserve all the plaudits they are getting.

"I've seen a lot of Wycombe this season and I've felt for a long time they were going to do much better than just staying up. The first half of the season has proved that - they have done exceptionally."

Blues go to Bury, the pre season title favourites, on Saturday and Scott said: "I think they are playing with such confidence, they will go there with no fear."
