Bury 1, Wycombe Wanderers 1.

Fred Onyedinma came to Wanderers’ rescue once again as his equaliser secured a precious point in the snow at Bury.

The on-loan Millwall youngster netted for the third match in succession, as Blues battled back to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches against the highly fancied Shakers.

The match was largely a lottery on a complete gluepot of a pitch, and Bury deservedly went in front through Danny Mayor’s tap-in after getting to grips with the tricky conditions quicker than their opponents.

Snow had fallen in the early afternoon, doing nothing to improve a pitch that had already been given a liberal coating of sand.

Several large puddles had formed a long time before kick off but referee David Webb insisted the surface was fine to play on.

Blues rocked under some early pressure from the hosts as Matt Ingram had to tip over a miscued header from a corner by team mate Sido Jombati, before experienced striker Ryan Lowe had an effort headed off the line by Aaron Pierre from another set piece.

The awful pitch made life difficult for both sides but it was the hosts who adapted to it more easily and Lowe ought to have done better after collecting a Craig Jones pass and spinning past his man in one movement than blaze wildly over the bar.

Veteran Lowe was booked for a foul fellow Liverpudlian Peter Murphy before flicking a header high over the top from a whipped Chris Hussey delivery from the left.

But he had a hand in the opening goal as Bury took the lead in farcical circumstances. Alfie Mawson got his feet stuck in the quagmire as he tried to clear Lowe’s cross, Jombati struggled to get it away and Mayor bravely slid in to jab the loose ball over the line from close range.

Mayor was hurt in the process of scoring as he skidded off the saturated ground and into the goalpost, but the damage was even worse for Lowe as he had to come off after running into the advertising hoardings in a lung busting effort to get the ball into the box.

Blues responded as Aaron Holloway’s fierce shot was blocked following a weak punch from goalkeeper Nick Pope and Murphy looped a header just the wrong side of the upright from a Sam Wood cross.

A trademark Joe Jacobson free kick from the edge of the box deflected off the wall for a corner, and when the Shakers struggled to clear their lines Pierre struck a fierce shot flashing just the wrong side of the post.

Wanderers finished the half strongly as the offside flag twice came to the home side’s rescue, Pope saving well after Onyedinma had wriggled through and Jombati crashing one against the post as a long range shot from Marcus Bean deflected into his path off a team mate.

They had the first opening of the second half as well as Pope had to leap full length to turn Holloway’s header round the post after the Welshman got on the end of a searching Jombati delivery.

But the match was increasingly becoming a lottery with the pitch cutting up and players struggling to stay on their feet. Pierre backed off Hallam Hope, incorrectly believing he had been penalised for a foul on the Bury man, but play continued and Wanderers were let off as substitute Daniel Nardiello stabbed the ball into the side netting from Hope’s pass.

Marcus Bean belied the conditions to get onto an incisive pass along the ground and break clear, but his claims for a penalty when he went down under Adam El-Abd’s challenge were ignored and the midfielder’s only reward was a fruitless corner.

Wanderers got back on level terms however as Jacobson played the ball forward and Onyedinma muscled a defender off the ball before beating a path to goal and lashing a wonderful shot high into the net.

Bury felt Onyedinma had committed a foul in winning the ball prior to his goal, and coach Chris Brass was sent to the stands for protesting a little too vociferously.

His tail up, Onyedinma almost had another moments later as he skipped clear of the defence from a Holloway pass but this time Pope read the situation well and was swiftly off his line to make a brave stop at the striker’s feet.

The debutant keeper impressed again with a sharp low stop to foil Pierre’s fierce shot, after the big defender’s first effort with his head had been blocked.

Danny Rose slashed a volley wildly off target in a rare opening for the hosts, while Pierre was crowded out as he tried to shoot and the defender had the game's last chance as he headed wide
