A superb display of attacking football did the damage for Wanderers on Tuesday night as they edged a five goal thriller against Luton.
Gareth Ainsworth named an unchanged team for the third game running and his continued use of Sam Saunders in central midfield paid dividends as the on loan Brentford man put in an all action display. The 31-year-old opened the scoring after two minutes and caused the hosts’ backline problems throughout with his range of passing and clever movement.
Captain Paul Hayes once again showed his quality with a superb pass that set-up Wycombe’s third goal. The striker had earlier put the visitors 2-1 up with his sixth penalty of the season.
A contender for goal of the season came from centre-back Alfie Mawson as he rampaged forward from the half-way line before burying a shot in the bottom corner after linking up with Hayes. He also made a number of vital interceptions and tackles as Luton threw men forward in search of an equaliser.
Matt Bloomfield epitomised Wanderers intensity and the midfielder was also a force to be reckoned with going forward as he ran beyond the Luton defence leading to the award of Blues’ penalty.
