Wanderers got back to winning ways after consecutive defeats as they saw off rock bottom Cheltenham Town 2-1 at Adams Park.

Gareth Ainsworth said he had opted for an attacking formation with forward thinking personnel but it was two of his defenders who did the damage against the Robins.

Aaron Pierre showed skill and composure not often associated with a centre back to shake off the attentions of Troy Brown and rifle a shot into the bottom corner.

After Durrell Berry had equalised Alfie Mawson popped up to head the Blues back in front with what proved to be the winning goal.

Both players “earned their bread” as Ainsworth put it with their defensive work and they laid the foundations for a win alongside Nico Yennaris who came tantalisingly close to scoring his first Wanderers goal.

The full-back bombed forward regularly and on one foray rattled the crossbar with a thumping shot which bounced down and looked to have crossed the line.

Up top Aaron Holloway made the most of his second straight start as he showed the touch, physicality and skill that has marked him out as a player with big potential.
