Gareth Ainsworth has said he will change Wanderers’ preparation for Tuesday night’s game against Exeter at Adams Park in a bid to end their midweek jinx.

The Chairboys have gone over three years without a victory on home turf in Tuesday night matches, with four winless fixtures coming this season against Tranmere, Accrington and Plymouth in League Two and Coventry in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

No one seems to be able to put their finger on quite why Wanderers struggle so much at home on a Tuesday night, but Ainsworth admitted he will do things differently in an attempt to reverse their fortunes.

“We’ll approach it differently, I have to,” he said.

“We’re going to have to change things up a bit because we haven’t won for three or four years on a Tuesday night at home and we really could do with putting that one to bed now.

“What a time it would be to do it with the chasing pack. I know they’ve got some tough games but anyone can beat anyone in this league at this stage of the season so we’ll be hoping we can do a job on Exeter and continue this push for promotion.”

Paul Tisdale’s team arrive in Buckinghamshire tenth in the table but their hopes of a late charge for the play-offs were dealt a big blow as they were thrashed 4-0 by Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Ainsworth believes that result could work one of two ways when the two teams meet on Tuesday night, with Exeter looking to do the double over Wycombe after a 2-1 win back in October.

The Blues boss said: “They took a hammering so they could be in disarray or they could be itching to bounce back.

“If you get an early goal against them their heads could go or they could react differently.

“That’s football and that’s why you come and watch it; you don’t know how they’re going to approach it, we don’t know how the game’s going to go but all we can do is produce a consistent team performance and after 46 games the table won’t lie.”
