Sam Wood felt Wanderers’ work on the training ground had paid off as they kept Adebayo Akinfenwa aka ‘The Beast’ quiet during their League Two clash against AFC Wimbledon.

The 32-year-old ‘s nickname is due to his big build and physical strength – he also owns a clothing label named Beast Mode – and he attempted to bully the Chairboys’ backline on Saturday afternoon.

Akinfenwa, who has 13 league goals to his name this season, came closest to scoring during a tight affair when he struck the post in the first half and he was involved in a running battle with Aaron Pierre and Alfie Mawson.

“Luckily enough he didn’t come over to my side too much, which I was pretty pleased about,” joked Wood.

“He’s a big guy, a good player, he’s been around and he’s a handful. We worked on it in training and I don’t think he caused us too many problems today because we’d worked on it.”

Joe Jacobson was missing for the second game running, meaning that Wood once again occupied the left-back berth against the Dons.

Jacobson was in the stands in south London alongside fellow absentees Sido Jombati, Aaron Holloway and Matt McClure but he did tweet after the match that he hoped to be back for Saturday’s game against Morecambe, although Wood is happy to fill in for as long as needed

He said: “I prefer playing up the pitch a bit more but I have to do a job for the team.

“No one else can play there and hopefully JJ will be fit for next week. I don’t mind. I started my career there, but I prefer to be playing further forward. The gaffer wants me to do a job for the team that’s what I’m going to do.”

Gareth Ainsworth will be forced to reshuffle his defence once again when the Shrimps visit Adams Park after Aaron Pierre received a red card against Wimbledon, and he could also be without right-back Nico Yennaris after he injured his neck.

The draw took Wanderers’ fate out of their own hands in the race for an automatic promotion spot in League Two, and they head into their final two fixtures of the season relying on the results of fourth place Bury.

Wood is hopeful that two more wins will be enough for Wycombe to earn promotion amid their injury crisis.

“At one stage two of them went down at the same stage so I thought ‘oh god, here we go’. We’re a small squad, we stick together and that’s what we’re going to do this week. We’re going to recover right and prepare for next Saturday,” said the 28-year-old.

On achieving Wanderers’ record points haul in the Fotoball League he said: “That’s a great effort from the boys.

“I don’t think we’ve had injuries all season and coming to the last few weeks we’ve got about ten. That’s always the way. We’ll all get together, stick together and keep going.”
