Southend are the ideal opposition in the League Two play-off final for Wanderers striker Steven Craig, who says he enjoys facing the Shrimpers.

The 34-year-old scored his first goal for the club on his fourth appearance when he netted the winner in a 2-1 victory at Adams Park last season.

On the last meeting between the sides in March, the Scotsman popped up again to help his side earn a draw.

“I like playing against Southend, I’ve got a good record against Southend. I think I’ve played against them three times and I’ve scored twice so it’s a happy hunting ground for me,” he said.

“It’s been a tale of two games, we beat them convincingly at our place 4-1 and then we managed to scrape a 2-2 there.

“They’ll feel aggrieved, like us, that they missed out on the top three on the last day of the season. I think their expectations were a lot higher than ours but they’ll know they’re in for a game on Saturday.”

Phil Brown’s side, who finished level on points with Blues, were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion and they are slight favourites with most bookies to win on Saturday.

Wanderers have defied the odds all season and are used to playing the role of the under-dog.

Craig said: “We know that our expectations at the start of the season was to get 55 points, we’ve surpassed that by a good margin and it would be disappointing to fall at the final hurdle.

“We know going into Saturday that if we play to our capabilities, which we have done for most of the season, that we won’t be far away.

“We’ve never felt pressure all season. The only time we’ve felt pressure was at home when we were trying to get over the line.

“We know there’s no pressure on us Saturday, nobody’s expecting us to get a result and it’s one of those games where it’s about who turns up on the day.

“The teams are very evenly matched and it’s about who holds their bottle on the day.”
