Wycombe’s trip to Wembley is pay back for the trials and tribulations of last season, according to Matt Bloomfield.

A loyal following of Blues fans journeyed to Plainmoor in hope rather than expectation on the final day of last season to Wanderers pull off ‘The Great Escape’ after a harrowing campaign had left them contemplating relegation to the Conference.

A revamped team have since flourished under the guidance of Gareth Ainsworth, Bloomfield feels their displays this season have given the Chairboys support something to be proud of again.

“None of us would have believed at Torquay last year that we’d be going to Wembley in a play-off final; I certainly wouldn’t have thought it,” he said.

“Coming into this season, after finishing so close to the relegation zone, we were all aiming for a mid-table finish and higher.

“To get into the play-offs would have been great but to be in the top three for so long and get into the play-off final at Wembley is lovely payback to give our supporters.”

It’s the club’s first appearance at the national stadium since 1994 and the midfielder urged them to savour the day.

He said: “It’s been over 20 years since they’ve (Wycombe fans) been there, they went through so much last year but they stuck with us.

“This year, we’ve given them a little bit of thanks with our wins and performances and a day out at Wembley just tops that.

“It’s a day out for them to enjoy, go to the new Wembley and hopefully we can have some celebrations like we had after the final game against Torquay last year.”
