Wanderers’ decision to dispense with striker Matt McClure was the right one, according to Keith Scott.

The 23-year-old, who was the standout name on the list of players who were released by Wycombe last week, has been dubbed as a “mystery” by Scott, who says he felt the frontman had the tools to become a force in League Two.

A former Blues striker himself, Scott saw unfulfilled potential in McClure, who made 124 appearances and scored 26 goals after joining as a trainee in 2010.

“If you look at the games he’s played and his goal return then you would have to say yes,” said Scott when asked if it was the right decision to let him go.

“Matt McClure is a mystery to me because I’ve watched him play a lot over the last few years and I see a player who could potentially get 20 goals a season. The problem is that he doesn’t play enough.

“He was always injured, he always had an injury which was baffling to me because Wycombe don’t have a reserve side, so how did he keep getting injured? I’m not surprised because Gareth opted to go with a smaller squad and what he can’t afford to do with a small squad is carry players.”

The striker finished as the club’s top goal scorer as they stayed up on the final day of the 2013/14 season, endearing himself to Blues supporters with nine goals which helped keep them in the Football League.

However, McClure endured a difficult 2014/15 campaign with niggling injuries and a red card against Tranmere, in which he was sent-off less than four seconds after coming on as a substitute, denying him a run in the side.

The forward’s penultimate appearance for the club against Exeter in April summed up his season as he left the pitch injured just ten minutes after replacing Aaron Holloway.

Scott said: “As much as I thought Matty McClure had the potential to be a 20 goal a season man the bottom line is that the boy never delivered.

“He’s had a fair crack of the whip and ample opportunity to be the main man and he just hasn’t done it.

“I’m disappointed for the lad because when I’ve watched him in games I’ve always believed he’s got something, but unfortunately he just hasn’t delivered the goods.”
