Anthony Stewart has returned to Wycombe Wanderers on a two-year deal – seven months after leaving the club to pursue a career higher up the Football League.

The 22-year-old came through the Blues’ youth system, making his debut in January 2012 before going on to become a regular as the Chairboys avoided relegation to the Conference on the last day of the 2013/14 campaign, in which he made 39 appearances.

Stewart opted to try his luck elsewhere last summer and eventually joined League One side Crewe on loan in November before signing permanently in January.

The centre-back found chances limited at the Gresty Road club and has returned to Adams Park at the end of his contract having played just ten times for Alex.

Gareth Ainsworth said: “Anthony is a tremendous talent and I’m delighted that he’s agreed to come back to Adams Park.

“We understood his reasons for leaving the club and we did our best to keep him here. However, this is a fresh start for both Anthony and for us, and I’m confident that he can pick up where he left off as an excellent young player with real potential to develop.

“He’s got pace, he’s a threat in the opposition box and he can play in a number of positions. I’ve no doubt he’ll be a great addition to the side.”
