Marlow boss Mark Bartley is hopeful Wanderers will take a closer look at some of the young talent at Oak Tree Road after other Football League clubs began to hover over his prized assets this summer.

Three of Bartley’s squad have attracted interest from League One clubs, resulting in trials at Swindon Town for Richie Whittingham and new signing Sanchez Cammock, while Barnsley took a look at midfielder Devontae Romeo.

The latter two were sent back to Marlow with areas of their games to work on before they were extended invites to rejoin their respective teams later in the season, with midfielder Whittingham set to begin his spell with the Robins on Monday.

There has been interest in the past from Wanderers, according to Bartley who says Richard Dobson came to cast his eye over some of his players.

“They showed a bit of interest last season,” he said. “We had their assistant manager come across to one of our games and I had a good chat with him, and I’m just hopeful we can get the lines of communication open again this season.

“I’d love to be able to send a few players their way because if I’ve got players that are trialling with League One clubs such as Barnsley and Swindon, I’d prefer them to go into Wycombe and improve the side in the local area first.

“I’m hopeful that Wycombe will give us an opportunity to send one or two players across for them to have a look at.”

The Marlow boss says clubs high up the football pyramid came to watch the team last season following the remarkable rise of Ben Gladwin, who moved to Championship side QPR this summer in a £1.5m deal after his exploits for Swindon.

Mark Cooper plucked the midfielder from the then Hellenic Premier Division side and he proceeded to score 11 goals en route to helping Town reach the League One play-off final.

Bartley said: “We had a lot of scouts at our games last year. We had Reading down there, QPR – they were both down there at the last game of the season – Brentford have been there, so a lot of clubs are watching our games.

“I think it’s quite well documented that I’ve got a lot of young players who have good backgrounds but for one reason or another never quite made it.

“It’s now about what I’m doing to try and develop them and push them on to do it at a higher level. I’m still hopeful that we can get one or two across to Wycombe and they can have a look at them as well.”

Romeo, Whittingham and Cammock, who signed from Highmoor Ibis last month, have committed to playing for the club in the Division One South and West league next season, although Bartley would be more than happy to see his players move on to bigger things.

“We’ve got these boys that the Football League teams are looking at, and it’s good for us as a club that we’re on the radar and people are seeing that,” he said.

“Now it’s about making sure we can get them to the next level and making sure they’re ready to take those opportunities.

“They’ve come back from those trials and they’ve been reinvigorated. These boys have been working really hard, and, like I say, I’m hopeful that Wycombe will give us an opportunity to send a couple of the lads across for Gareth Ainsworth and his staff to have a look at because they’ll agree that these boys are not too far away.”
