BLUES chief Gareth Ainsworth hailed his heroes as they set a new club record for the best start to a Football League season.

He masterminded tonight’s 1-0 win at Morecambe which saw Wanderers make it three straight league wins and no goals conceded.

And they did it despite an injury crisis which saw them have just one fit centre half, Aaron Pierre, who headed home the second half winner from a free kick.

Ainsworth said: “I’m really pleased. What a start to the season. Records like that are great. It’s nice to have these things. I didn’t tell the boys before the game because I didn’t want to put any pressure on them but I said after the game ‘you’ve just become record breakers as the first Wycombe team to win three in a row at the start of the season’ and you could see the pride oozing out of them.

“Three wins and we haven’t conceded yet which is fantastic for the boys and the defenders while the forwards worked their socks off.”

Ainsworth would not reveal whether he had tried to bring a loanee in to cover for his injured defenders but, if he did, he now knows that he can trust the men he has already got in house to plug the holes for him.

Sido Jombati performed like a thoroughbred in his new central position. He read the game like a sweeper and was calmness personified in the heat of a battle which was never far from boiling over.

Ainsworth said: “He can play anywhere along that backline. He’s a very versatile player, he’s cultured on the ball as you would expect from the Portuguese, he reads the game really well and is improving all the time. To get him from Cheltenham a year ago I thought was an absolute snip and to extend his contract by three more years is good business for Wycombe Wanderers.”

And on a night when it initially looked as though the defence might be his biggest problem it was another defender Pierre who came up trumps with the winning goal as he climbed high to meet Joe Jacobson’s free kick.

Ainsworth said: “That’s what he’s got in his locker. He’s solid at the back and he’s always got a goal in him and it won’t be long before Aaron Pierre stars turning some heads as well.”

Similar to their win at Barnet on Saturday, Wanderers had to hang on in there at times, particularly in the first half when Wycombe’s five and half hour coach journey looked like it had taken its toll.

Ainsworth “It wasn’t a game for the purists but sometimes you have to grind out results and that’s exactly what we did. It was a game of two halves and I told the guys that the onslaught they took in the first half they had to give back to Morecambe in the second half.

“At half time I tried to make it a new game and forget what had happened in the first half. The boys had just had a defending session in that period and I told them to go and have an attacking session in the second half.

“We kept Morecambe at bay and took the chance when we had it. There wasn’t much between the teams except Aaron Pierre’s fantastic header at the back stick from a set play which we work heavily on.”

Ainsworth added: “Morecambe is a tough place to come to. We set off at half ten this morning and that is the way it is for us but we make the most of it. We are together and the spirit on the bench is just as good as the spirit on the pitch. I’m really pleased to have the characters I’ve got, the staff I’ve got and the fans we’ve got who made it like a home game for us.”

He was refusing to get carried away though by his team’s dream start to the campaign which sees them joint top of the table.

He said: “There’s a lot of football still to be played yet but it’s great to be unbeaten for the first three. It’s great but we are still a small club. We are right down there in terms of resources with the Morecambes and the Dagenhams.

“It would be nice to just keep chipping away at our 61 point total and if we have a fantastic season like last year then great.”
