Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has praised his player’s professional approach after they won 4-0 against Halifax Town in the FA Cup first round.

Goals from Garry Thompson, Sido Jombati, Max Kretzschmar and Aaron Amadi-Holloway sealed a comfortable win for Wycombe at The Shay.

With Halifax playing their football in the Vanarama National League the potential for an upset was clear and Ainsworth was pleased with his player’s professional display.

“I’m glad people have seen how professionally we have dealt with the game because that was the aim today,” he said when quizzed on the performance.

“We wanted to keep under the radar today because we knew the headlines could be all about us and that’s what we did with a professional job.

“We were in a no win situation because no one expects us to lose, and everyone comes to see an upset and newspapers love writing about them.

“The performance means there will be as little fuss as possible made about us which is what we wanted.”

In a game played in driving rain and strong winds the scene was perfectly set for a cup giant killing but the Chairboys never looked like losing after Thompson’s opener.

Ainsworth accepted that Wycombe had to adapt their game and play longer passes in the first half in order to deal with the difficult conditions.

The second half produced a much more fluid showing and Wycombe could have won the game by more than four with Thompson going close on a number of occasions.

Ainsworth explained: “I thought in the first half we played the conditions well and had to play that little bit longer because of the wind.

“I said to the team that we would be able to play our game in the second half with the wind behind us.

“We did that and the subs came on and had a good impact. I didn’t see us getting troubled too much and we played very well today.”

The result continues Wycombe’s recent recovery in form that has seen them go three games in a row without defeat after they had previously lost five on the bounce.

However, this rediscovered competitive edge will have to be put on hold until November 21 when they next return to League Two action at Wimbledon.

The club play a friendly against Leeds United at Adams Park next Friday in which Ainsworth aims to give his entire squad a chance to play.

He said: “There are players who need a game and without a reserve team it is very tough to get an 11 vs. 11 match.

“I only have 17 fit players so I can’t really rotate the players that much, so it will be a first team that I will play on Friday and I think Leeds will be doing the same.”
