Luke O’Nien says he recovered from an illness over the weekend to score the winner against Yeovil Town on Tuesday night.

The midfielder scored the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining to help the Blues climb to eighth in the table.

Despite his heroics O’Nien had to overcome a stomach bug that had ensured he had barely eaten over the course of the weekend.

He said: “I was pretty dead over the weekend and had a stomach bug so haven’t really eaten.

“I have to thank the physio team because they helped me get back out there and play today and I’m pleased to score.”

O’Nien’s effort was his third of an increasingly productive season that has seen him take on the role of energetic box to box midfielder.

He claims to be constantly working on his goal scoring and in a celebration that saw him run to the bench he was eager to thank the teammates that have helped hm.

“It is always nice to get on the score sheet and I celebrated with Thommo [Garry Thompson] and Max [Kretzschmar] today because they have worked with me on my finishing after training,” he said.

“It has helped me today and it is always nice to score but the main thing is the result.”

The benefits of the extra shooting sessions were clear in the classy manner in which O’Nien took his goal but his all round game offers much more.

While the likes of Marcus Bean and Matt Bloomfield are happy to occupy deeper roles O’Nien is in a state of perpetual motion when he plays.

His energetic playing style perfectly compliments that of his more sedate partners and the 21-year-old has highlighted the strong relationship all of the midfielders share.

O’Nien explained: “It is great to play alongside Bloomsy because he lets me get forward and it’s the same when I play with Marcus Bean.

“I have a great relationship with all of the midfielders and everyone recognises their jobs, and helps each other and we are all performing well.”

While O’Nien’s bond with his midfield partners is strong the youngster is also becoming a fan favourite.

The travelling Chairboys crowd serenaded him at the final whistle and O’Nien admits he is enjoying the extra attention he is being afforded by supporters.

He said: “It has been great the way the fans have welcomed me into the club. To have my own song is something I have always dreamed of so I have to thank them for that.”
