Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth says AFC Wimbledon were fully deserving of their 2-1 win over his side.

The Blues went down to Lyle Taylor’s second half penalty after Michael Harriman had cancelled out the Wimbledon striker’s opener.

Ainsworth was in a relaxed mood after the defeat which sees the Dons move back into contention for the play-off places, but did concede he had been disappointed by his side’s performance.

“We were no good enough in the first half and I had to lose my rag a bit at half-time and get the players on it for the second half which I don’t often do,” he said.

“Wimbledon created a number of chances. We don’t often have to say it, but fair play to Wimbledon they have worked really hard and they beat us fair and square.

“We will take it on the chin and we have three games we could get points out of now and the table is looking very interesting.”

Wimbledon’s opener drew a furious response from the Wycombe bench as they appealed for a foul on Jason McCarthy in the build-up to Taylor turning home.

The goal also saw referee Brendan Malone have to leave the field with a calf injury, and Ainsworth revealed the incident had proved to be pivotal in missing the apparent foul on the right-back.

He said: “Their goal is ironic because there is a definite foul on Jason McCarthy in the build-up, he has got stud marks down his knee.

“When the referee was asked why he didn’t give it he said he didn’t see it because his calf pulled just at that moment. It is one of those things I have to take and we will move on to next week.

“There are no sour grapes and I am not a manager who goes on about things other than the fact the best team won today.”

The match saw Jerell Sellars make his first start for the club and Ainsworth felt he showed flashes of the attacking quality he has been brought to Adams Park to provide.

Ainsworth said: “We had a little spark in Jerrell Sellars today and I thought he had a great league debut. He had some great touches and was a pain in the side of Wimbledon’s defenders.”
