Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth was pleased to take a point from Bootham Crescent as the Blues earned a 1-1 draw against York City.

Matt Bloomfield scored a header in the 88th minute to cancel out Vadaine Oliver’s well-taken first half opener.

Despite York’s lowly League Two standing, Ainsworth felt the point was a satisfactory result after watching play-off rivals Leyton Orient struggle against the same opposition last week.

He said: “I am pleased with the point. We watched Leyton Orient against York last week and York were the better team.

“York really put up a fight today and they are not in their current position through performances like today.

“We are pleased to get the point and it keeps us in the hunt [for the play-offs].”

The Minstermen were the more attacking threat throughout and but for the heroics of Ryan Allsop in the Wycombe goal could have been out of sight.

Allsop made a string of impressive stops at both 0-0 and 1-0 and the amount of work he got through was in stark contrast to York number one Scott Flinders.

Wycombe were once again poor in front of goal and Ainsworth accepted that York could easily have come away with all three points.

He said: “York have really given us a good game today and they have had some good chances to put the game to bed.

“It is about goalscorers again. Chances wise we both created a similar amount. We have both had the same amount of crosses and corners, the difference was hitting the target.

“I think we hit the target two or three times and one went in which is great, but we need to hit the target more.”

Bloomfield’s late equaliser did not come cheaply as the long-serving midfielder took a blow to his arm while stooping the head the scrambled strike.

What looked like an innocuous incident could be fairly serious according to Ainsworth and came at the end of a physical game which saw a number of Wanderers players pick up knocks.

“I think that’s his first goal of the season, so it is a good moment for him. I am just worried about his arm and he took a really nasty kick, ironically, from his mate Dave Winfield,” Ainsworth said.

“Aaron Pierre picked up a nasty injury in the second half. People won’t know that Jason McCarthy is carrying a massive dead leg from the first minute. You don’t often see him limping around, he is usually one of the fittest.”
