BLUES skipper Paul Hayes is ready to commit his future to Wycombe Wanderers.

The captain’s current contract runs out this summer but he says he isn’t looking to go anywhere else and wants to stay with the Adams Park outfit.

Hayes – who scored in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Barnet – isn’t expecting any problems regarding a new deal.

He said: “The gaffer and the chairman have made me aware that they would like me to be here next season so I’m not too worried.”

Asked if it would interest him staying, Hayes replied: “One hundred per cent, being the captain and how much I love playing for the club.

“I have a good relationship with the fans, the chairman, the manager, staff and I love the players so I’m very comfortable here as a player and I wouldn’t look to move elsewhere.”

Hayes ended his personal barren run in front of goal, which dated back to February, with the opening goal on Saturday.

He believes that’s probably the longest lean spell of his career and puts it down to not having had a proper pre-season as he battled to shrug off the Achilles problem he finished the previous campaign with. It did not disappear, and kept him out for a chunk this term.

He said: “It’s been hard for me because it’s been stop start with injuries. I didn’t have a proper pre-season because my Achilles was still hurting from last season.

“I was always playing catch-up with my fitness and, if you ask any professional footballer, they will say if you have a bad pre-season you are playing catch up throughout the season.

“The season before I had a great pre-season and I hit the ground running.”

Now he is prepared to work through the summer recess to make sure he is in tip-top condition to be ready, whatever division the Blues find themselves in next season.

Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth was delighted to see Hayes rediscover his scoring touch on Saturday and hopes that goal will set his captain off again.

He said: “Hayesey has had a little bit of a stop-start season with injuries and I think that has affected him. But he’s a fantastic skipper to have around.

“His GPS and the data we get from Paul Hayes is phenomenal as well as the little touches and the goals he comes up with.

"People don’t see it but we recognise it and Paul Hayes is a fantastic person to have around the squad. His effort has been incredible this season.

“Goal scorers want to score goals all the time but he offers so much more than just goals.”
