Wycombe Wanderers defender Aaron Pierre was left frustrated by a 0-0 draw against Yeovil Town which put a big dent in the club’s play-off hopes.

Tuesday night’s stalemate was the Chairboys’ fifth League Two game in a row without a win in a run which has seen them fall four points behind seventh placed AFC Wimbledon.

It represents a worrying slump for Wycombe after they were two points clear in the play-off race at the end of March, and Pierre accepts recent results have been far from ideal.

“Obviously everyone is disappointed [with the 0-0 draw] and we need to be winning these games if we are going to get into the play-offs,” Pierre explained.

“Other teams around us are winning games and it is hard because we are putting in 100 per cent and it is just not working for us at the moment.

“These are the moments when we need to make things happen and it is just not going our way.”

There are mitigating circumstances to Wycombe’s slump, not least an injury crisis which has engulfed the club in recent weeks.

However, three draws from matches against teams in the bottom half of the table represents a poor return from their last three matches.

It has left Gareth Ainsworth’s men with an uphill battle to secure back-to-back play-off berths, but Pierre agrees with his manager’s assertion that it is still an attainable goal.

He said: “It is still achievable. We have put more pressure on ourselves now because we have to more or less win all of our games and Wimbledon will have to lose games.

“It is out of our hands but we have to make sure we win our games starting with Portsmouth on Saturday. If we can win that game it will give us a good starting point for the remainder of the season.”

If one aspect of Wycombe’s play has remained impervious to the trials and tribulations of a topsy-turvy season, it has been the defence.

Pierre was once again at the heart of a watertight back four which kept its 17th clean sheet in the league this season on Tuesday.

Attack has been the real issue for the Blues and while Pierre insists the entire team is trying their hardest to find the net, he admits the lack of goals has been a frustration.

“The gaffer makes sure we work hard on defence in training and it really helps us, but on the other hand we need to be attacking more and scoring goals,” said Pierre.

“It is frustrating but the strikers are trying as hard as the defenders are for the team. They are trying to score goals and that is what they are there for.

“They want to score the goals to get the glory of taking us to the play-offs, but it is just one of those things where it isn’t quite working for us.”
