If there is one area Wycombe Wanderers cannot be accused of falling short of expectations in this season it is defence.

Wanderers finished the League Two campaign second only to Oxford for goals conceded and their defensive solidity has generally provided comfort throughout the year.

It is understandable then that Gareth Ainsworth feels he must look to build his squad around his defensive unit when dipping into the transfer market this summer.

“You look at the back four who are under contract. [Aaron] Pierre, [Anthony] Stewart, [Joe] Jacobson and [Sido] Jombati. There is not many better back fours than that around,” Ainsworth said.

“We will build from that back four, but I want goals in my team and that has been lacking and I will make sure that is addressed this summer.”

Ainsworth clearly feels captain Paul Hayes can rediscover his goalscoring touch after awarding him a new two-year contract on Monday.

His striking options have been depleted though with the departure of Gozie Ugwu and Max Kretzschmar while Rowan Liburd, Jerell Sellars and Paris Cowan-Hall will return to their parent clubs.

That leaves the Wycombe boss with just Hayes, Garry Thompson and the in limbo Aaron Amadi-Holloway – it is unclear whether he will stay at the club after a loan with Oldham Athletic – as his striking options.

Ainsworth therefore has no doubts as to where he needs to strengthen and made it clear new attacking options will arrive at Adams Park.

“I have got to address certain things with certain people and I will be doing that in the summer,” Ainsworth said after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Oxford united.

“The positive is I know what I have to do in the summer, there is a minor rebuild needed in certain areas.

“There are going to be forwards coming in whether they are ours now and on new contracts, or whether they are ones coming in.”
