Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth says he is excited by the makeup of his squad after the Blues beat Maidenhead United 4-1.

Luke O’Nien’s brace added to strikes from Garry Thompson and Sam Wood to hand Wanderers a comfortable win after Dave Tarpey had given the hosts the lead.

While it was the Blues old guard who got the goals, Ainsworth believes the performance showed the attacking quality his new side possesses.

“Woody’s goal is typical Woody, it was a great strike, and Luke works hard on his technique with the volley,” Ainsworth said.

“Thommo’s [goal] is a left foot poacher’s goal which is what he is paid to do as a centre-forward. I’m really pleased that the old brigade got the goals, but the new brigrade made a big impact.

“I am really excited by Nick Freeman, he is a great signing from non-league and we have great strength.

“I look on the bench in the second half and I just see problems with team selection which is a great thing.

“We have to take credit for a decent performance today. The people who were here today will agree that some of the moves were excellent.”

The only source of irritation for Ainsworth was the manner in which the Blues conceded in the 10th minute as a simple long ball and flick on opened them up.

The goal highlighted a potential weakness in the new centre-back partnership of Anthony Stewart and Will De Havilland.

Aaron Pierre’s ongoing fitness issues mean the pair may start the League Two campaign in the heart of the Wycombe defence, but Ainsworth believes they will adapt quickly.

“We have two young’uns at the back there and one long ball did us early on. I was disappointed with that,” Ainsworth said.

“That goal is very preventable and we went through it at half-time. Will De Havilland has come out of under-21 football and is learning all the time. I thought he come through the second half really well.”
