Gareth Ainsworth believes his Wycombe Wanderers team deserved to come away with a win from their 1-0 EFL Cup defeat to Bristol City at Adams Park.

The Blues went down to Tammy Abraham’s precise first half finish, but Wycombe did more than enough in the second half to turn the game around.

It wasn’t to be, however, but Ainsworth felt his team were the better side and were worthy of more than the narrow defeat.

He said: “The second half I think there was only one team that looked like the Championship side out there.

“No disrespect to Bristol but I thought we had the majority of the game.”

Ainsworth’s appraisal of the 90 minutes was fair and Wanderers would surely have found the net had it not been for the intervention of Robins’ keeper Richard O’Donnell.

He made a string of fine saves in the second period before an injury to the referee saw Wycombe’s momentum quelled.

Ainsworth was clearly disappointed by the unexpected stoppage and also took the chance to praise the City stopper.

“I think the referee change absolutely killed us. We were well in the ascendency when that happened and I am really proud of all the boys,” he said.

“If we play like we played tonight the goals will come, which I know people want, because we haven’t scored any goals in two games.

“Anyone who wants to be negative probably didn’t come to the game tonight because there wasn’t very much not to be happy about. Their keeper was outstanding tonight, man of the match for me.”

Ainsworth’s side now turn their attention to a League Two match against Grimsby Town on Saturday.

They will look to claim their first win of the season against the newly promoted side in what will be the first league match of the season at Adams Park.
