Winning a game at the death is the perfect way to secure victory according to Wycombe Wanderers right-back Sido Jombati.

The Portuguese was speaking after Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Grimsby Town which gave Wanderers their first League Two points of the campaign.

Anthony Stewart struck as the game ticked into injury time to send Chairboys fans wild, and Jombati says victory is all the sweeter when secured late on.

“Everybody knows that is the best way to win a game for the fans and for the players,” Jombati explained.

“If you score in the last minute it is very hard for the other team to come back. Scoring after battling for 90 minutes is always the best.”

The goal itself had seen Adebayo Akinfenwa send a towering header against both posts before Stewart charged in to lash home the rebound from a yard.

Time seemed to stand still as Wycombe’s summer signing’s effort flirted with dropping over the line, and Jombati was quick to praise Stewart’s alertness.

“It was a great header, this is his [Akinfenwa’s] strength. I think he deserved a goal after the header,” he said.

“Anthony believed until the end. It was good work from Bayo to flick it on and I don’t know how it didn’t go in.

“All 21 players were asleep except Anthony and he carried on to get the three points.”

Jombati broke the deadlock after 10 minutes of the second half at Adams Park with an excellent free kick which he delicately clipped in off the post from 20 yards.

The strike was reminiscent of the 28-year-old’s late effort at Portsmouth last season and he is developing a taste for the spectacular.

Unlike at Fratton Park, there was little discussion about who would take charge of the free kick which lit the touch paper on a previously dull match.

Jombati, who claimed the goal of the season award last term, says his ability over dead balls stems from trusting his technique, which includes a short run up.

“I take one or two steps back depending on how many I think I need to get the ball over the wall,” he said.

“I have done it since I was a kid, but I never really had the opportunity to take free kicks because people never saw me taking them.

“Last year I took one and people saw it, so today I had the opportunity to take it without many people asking me for the ball.”
