Gareth Ainsworth believes his Wycombe Wanderers side panicked in the second half of their 1-1 League Two draw against Accrington Stanley.

Adebayo Akinfenwa scored his first Wanderers goal after five minutes to give the Blues the lead at the end of a first half which they dominated.

However, a mistake from Sam Wood combined with poor defending to allow Sean McConville to level with a simple volley.

Wanderers failed to rediscover their form and Ainsworth believes the goal made it harder for them to replicate their first half display.

“We started panicking in the second half a little bit,” Ainsworth explained.

“Accrington scored and a little bit of panic set in and we seemed to go back to playing a little bit too long.

“At half-time we were well on top and I said to my assistant I am happy whatever the result because we have played superbly well. But the second half disappoints me.”

“We had chances to put the game to bed in the first half and we have to take them.”

Akinfenwa’s strike was just reward for a strong all round performance in which he led the line with typical power.

His was replaced after 70 minutes to ensure he maintained his fitness and Ainsworth felt the Blues struggled to adapt to a new set up.

“It is a Great goal and Bayo is going to do that to teams. He is 34 now and we have to make sure he stays fit for games,” he said.

“Thommo comes on and he has different strengths to Bayo, I think we starved him of his strength.”

The match also saw Chelsea loanee Jamal Blackman make his debut in goal for Wanderers and produce a composed display.

Ainsworth was suitably impressed with the six foot six inch tall youngster and is convinced Wycombe have secured the services of an excellent prospect.

He said: “Jamal Blackman had a great debut and is going to be a great acquisition. You see the way he rolls the ball out at the right times and his kicking was fantastic.”

Wanderers will now prepare for a trip to Blackpool on Saturday where they will look for their frist away points of the campaign.
